In this edition of #ICYMI we focus on two popular social media platforms, Facebook and Twitter. Facebook has announced a change in the platform’s algorithm that will affects users’ feeds while Twitter is giving users more freedom and tightening platform security.
Last month, Facebook announced that another tweak is being made to users’ News Feeds. The platform will increase posts/updates from users’ personal networks in their News Feeds, decreasing the number of brand promotions, or random posts that currently appear. This algorithm tweak may negatively affect brands’ presence and reach on Facebook. Facebook said “post reach and referral traffic could potentially decline,” making it important for brands to ensure their messages are reaching the people they want and making the impact they desire. For community managers it will be important to monitor the ROI of Facebook advertisements with this shift in place.
Twitter recently made two updates that affect users’ security. The first change was the introduction of open direct messaging. Up until now, Direct Messages could only be sent and received between users who were following each other. Twitter has opened this up to all users on the platform — allowing brands to interact with customers, partners and prospective customers who do not currently follow them — creating an opportunity to engage where they previously could not. Twitter’s aim is to make the public side of Twitter as appealing and engaging as private conversations. Users have the option of turning this feature on or off, based on their preference.
Following this, Twitter announced it has tightened up its ‘Violent Threats Policy’ in response to abuse being seen on the platform. The company has unveiled two new changes to the Twitter Rules that include an expansion of the scope of the policy and giving more power to the support team to lock out an account for a period of time.
